Dreisicht housing development, Glattpark Opfikon
Glattpark development area to the north of the city of Zurich forms the background for this project. Integrated in the local courtyard space concept, the Dreisicht development forms an important link between the neighbouring buildings, but also has its own identity. All the apartments have windows facing in three different directions.
Building alignment, access, courtyard, sunlight/orientation
In Opfikon, close to the border to the city of Zurich, Glattpark, one of the largest continuous new build areas in Switzerland, is being created. The concept for Dreisicht housing development is based on the specified open courtyard concept. The buildings, whose asymmetrical placing produces exciting outdoor spaces, serve as an important link to the neighbouring buildings. The playful use of projections and recesses in the facade creates an individual identity
For cyclists and pedestrians, access is via an “internal space” that connects the outdoor spaces of the neighbouring projects. In the building with a stairs serving three apartments on each floor the staircase is placed directly on the facade and on each floor receives light from the side. In the type where the stairs serves four apartments on each floor the internal staircase is lit from above.
Thanks to the windmill-like layout all the apartments have three facades and views in three different directions. This basic figure of the building allows freely projecting loggias that do not need columns. The complex is finished in an earthy Siena red, with a recessed, anthracite-coloured plinth.
