Roof at the air terminal, Zurich Airport

Tankstelle, Flughafen, Fischer Architekten AG

Adjoining the development known as The Circle, between Butzenbühlring and Flughafenstrasse, the Flughafen Zürich AG is planning to renovate an existing fuelling infrastructure with fuel pumps, charging stations for electric cars, a shop and a carwash. A large roof extends over all the buildings except for the carwash lane.

Measuring 110 metres in length, the roof, designed in collaboration with Lukas Ingold Architektur GmbH and realised with Avo AG as general planner, is conceived as a simple steel construction with a glass skin. The structure is made up of a grid of steel beams carried by twelve steel columns placed equal distances apart. The upper flange of the steel beams serves as the support for the simple frame of the roof skin. The regular quadratic grid gives the space beneath it a clear, easily grasped quality, while the matt laminated safety glass ensures bright and even light.
